Namma Metro is set to bring relief to Bengaluru commuters with the addition of 21 new trains by next year. Once operational, these new trains will significantly enhance service frequency, reducing the interval between trains to just 3 minutes. This development is expected to provide a major boost to the city’s metro network, which is seen as the most effective solution to Bengaluru’s notorious traffic congestion.
Currently, Namma Metro covers approximately 76 km, serving thousands of passengers daily. On the Green Line, which runs from Madawara to Silk Board, and the Purple Line, stretching from Challaghatta to Whitefield, an average of 7 lakh people use the metro service each day. Peak hours often resemble a bustling fairground, with crowded platforms and packed trains.
As of now, Namma Metro operates 57 trains, with 55 trains dedicated to daily services and two kept in reserve for emergencies. Under the initial tender agreement for the Green and Purple lines, a total of 78 trains were planned. To fulfill this, 21 new trains will be added in phases starting January next year.
This expansion will help alleviate congestion on both lines, reducing wait times during peak hours. Currently, trains run every 5 minutes, but once the new trains are integrated, the interval will shrink to 3 minutes, offering a smoother and more comfortable commute for passengers.
With these upgrades, Namma Metro is set to become an even more reliable lifeline for Bengaluru’s residents.
